Hey welcome to my site.  please email to enquire : amandawatson "at" clear.net.nz

I’m working on taking a sculptural object from the ‘past’ and capturing images that it makes through photographing its shadows on a flat surface.  In a sense I’m referencing the abstract marks made by the sun hitting the object, painting nothing more than its absence.

I’m interested in these objects that are now defunct, taking and old thing and making it into ‘high art’, recontextualising meaning on a 2D surface.

Thematic ideas in my work are directly derived from a body of photographic work that I have produced from selected readymade objects.   These objects denote memory, and aspects of history and story in relation to their lost meaning.

My paintings describe the fall of light and shadow made from these objects.  Methods of making translucency and fluidity out of oil paint on gesso bring out dialogue around layers of meaning and more particularly lost meaning of the original objects.

At the moment I’m working with early 1900’s New Zealand colonial domestic objects that once belonged to relatives or that I have picked up from refuse centres or secondhand shops in my local area.

Drawing on traditional methods of painting (oils on canvas, gesso, dimensions of stretcher, reference to 17th century portraiture) this work speaks to the history and shifting of meaning.

Since graduating from Elam in 1996 with a BFA I have practiced and exhibited regularly.  And previously while working at the Waikato Museum/Gallery I began a Post-Grad Diploma in Museum Studies through Massey.  Using these curatorial ideas interests me, how we present our work to people, how people respond to our work, how people write about our work.    Traveling and working in Asia, India and Western Europe has influenced my work.  I began a ‘combined artists studio’ in my town and enjoy being part of a wider community as an artist.

Thanks everyone who visited the Trademe site to view the painting for auction, all proceeds went to A Roacha.  www.arocha.org
