Amanda's painting practice explores ideas memory, experience, and connection to place, through abstraction in painting

Amanda has a Bachelor of Fine Art (Elam, University of Auckland, New Zealand), and is currently studying towards a Masters in Visual Arts, painting (Wintec, New Zealand) while undertaking a short course in the Slade School of Fine Art’s Summer School (University College London).

Her practice has spanned 21 years including regular exhibition inside and outside of New Zealand, selected as a finalist in national art awards, and work included a New Zealand public collection.  She has participated in over 45 solo and group exhibitions, has over 19 published editorials, reviews, interviews and exhibition catalogues, has participated in seven national art awards since 1995.

Amanda's work has been presented in public exhibitions, including  ‘Nebula’ - a group show with Diane Prince and Layne Waerea at Ramp Gallery in Hamilton; ‘Competitive Advantage’ curated by Wendy Richdale, and ‘Cataloging Blue: Works from the University of Waikato Art Collection’, at the Calder & Lawson Gallery at the University of Waikato.

Her painting practice extends ideas memory, experience, and connection to place, through abstraction in painting.  The physical nature and character of paint and tools, help to direct decision making in the process of making paintings, and are underpinned by an intuitive process of reaching for memory while in the act of painting.  A common approach she takes is to record locations with film, photographs, drawings, and by gathering information directly from site such as textural rubbings.
